Name: Lisa Hill
Business Name: Lisa Hill Photography
Where are you from?: Clyde
What do you sell at the market?: Photographs
Where have you come from? I grew up on a sheep and cattle farm in Roxburgh and this lifestyle background has always been an influence on my creative work giving me inspiration from my natural environment. It has also let me explore the landscape and lead me to explore new areas of our beautiful country we call New Zealand and My Home.
After school I spent 4 years in Dunedin doing a Bachelor of Fine Arts and majoring in Photography, after graduating I was drawn to Queenstown which was my home for 5 years before I spent 2 years in Sydney. Finally I settled in Central Otago where we have just brought our first home in the township of Clyde with my family.
Why did you choose to work in the medium you do?: I have always been drawn to photography it allows me to explore and play with different artistic effects and finishes.
The digital era has allowed me to play with techniques and to create my own style. The combination of realistic images from my photographs with the textures I create in a painting gives a unique look; I enjoy the visual effects created when the two mediums merge. This is where my Kiwiana and Kitchen themed artwork came from.
Wanting to push my presentation further I started to use photo blocks and focused on a square size. Using a series of 3 gives it gives a powerful impression and a unique modern finish and name Art Blocks.
I introduced my landscapes and used the same square format then broke down the whole image into a composition of 3 to create a tryptic. Which when presented together is a powerful impression and a unique perspective of our beautiful country.
What do you love about the market?: I love how the Queenstown creative arts and crafts markets brings together such talented, creative people from around the area where we get to showcase our work to the visitors of New Zealand.
It allows us to create a business and for our work to grow and then travel the world. It is a great feeling to know that your artwork is hung on walls all over the world.
I also love meeting the people and hearing their stories of their travels in New Zealand, I give them a bit of my own advice of what to do and where to go. To talk about my story within my photographs and how I created my work. To be part of their travels is all part of the journey for them and for me. The people give the markets its life and the markets give us our creative opportunities.
Who is your biggest inspiration?: I get inspiration from what surrounds me, from an object on the farm to the sunset over the Remarkables. Images that explore and project the beauty with the land, the light, the texture to live experiences and express them through a visual form.
What's the one thing you can't live without?: I could not be without my camera it is my expressive tool that let me explore and express.
What has been your biggest adventure?: Having children, its an adventure that will never end and the most unique and original artwork I will ever make…..with a little help from my hubby!
